چکیده
In Response: We agree with Doshi (1) that in our study, reported in Public Response to Community Mitigation Measures for Pandemic Infl uenza (2), we purposely asked respondents to imagine a “severe outbreak” of “a new type of fl u,” and that possible scenario was vastly different from ordinary fl u seasons. Although previous pandemics have varied in their severity (3) and their concomitant illness and mortality rates, we were particularly interested in the public’s response to community mitigation interventions (4) that would only be recommended if a severe 1918-like pandemic occurred (e.g., Pandemic Severity Index 4 or 5). A great deal of cooperation from the public would be required to successfully implement community mitigation measures during a pandemic. The intensity of interventions must be matched with the severity of a pandemic to maximize the available public health benefi t that may result from using these measures while minimizing untoward secondary effects. Socially disruptive measures such as dismissing children from schools, closing childcare programs, social distancing in the community and at the workplace, and cancelling large gatherings would likely reduce community transmission of pandemic disease, but would also create challenges for the public. Therefore, these interventions would only be recommended if the severity of the pandemic warranted their use. The survey was conducted to inform policy-makers who were, at the time, developing recommendations for community-based interventions. Thus, a severe pandemic was used as the scenario for this national survey to gauge the public’s response to these proposed public health measures.

Molecular profiling reveals synaptic release machinery in Merkel cells.
Merkel cell-neurite complexes are somatosensory receptors that initiate the perception of gentle touch. The role of epidermal Merkel cells within these complexes is disputed. To ask whether Merkel cells are genetically programmed to be excitable cells that may participate in touch reception, we purified Merkel cells from touch domes and used DNA microarrays to compare gene expression in Merkel ...
متن کاملMerkel Cells Are a Touchy Subject
How the Merkel cell-neurite complex transduces and encodes touch remains unclear. Ikeda et al. now implicate Merkel cells as the primary sites of tactile transduction and the ion channel Piezo2 as the chief mechanotransducer. Surprisingly, Merkel cells also mediate allodynia, providing a new cellular target for chronic pain treatment.
متن کاملSomatostatin immunoreactive cells and Merkel cells in psoriasis.
Sir, We have reported previously on the increase in the number of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells with dendritic morphology in psoriatic skin (1, 2). The number of Merkel cells is increased in the psoriatic epidermis and, in contrast to the situation in normal skin, a subgroup of Merkel cells expresses somatostatin (3). This prompted the question as to whether the somatostatin-positive cells ...
متن کاملMerkel cells are essential for light-touch responses.
The peripheral nervous system detects different somatosensory stimuli, including pain, temperature, and touch. Merkel cell-neurite complexes are touch receptors composed of sensory afferents and Merkel cells. The role that Merkel cells play in light-touch responses has been the center of controversy for over 100 years. We used Cre-loxP technology to conditionally delete the transcription factor...
متن کاملCurrent considerations about Merkel cells.
Since the discovery of Merkel cells by Friedrich S. Merkel in 1875, knowledge of their structure has increased with the progression of new technologies such as electron and laser microscopy, and immunohistochemical techniques. For most vertebrates, Merkel cells are located in the basal layer of the epidermis and characterized by dense-core granules that contain a variety of neuropeptides, plasm...
